Suite No 2 For Guitar In A - 1 Allemand by Robert De Visee
ALLEMANDE
by ROBERT DE VISEE (1650 - 1732)
from his suite #2 in A major
Arranged and tabbed by Gavin Emery ( [email protected])
This is the first of three pieces comprising de Visee's (short!) second
suite for Baroque Guitar. It is taken from his first book of pieces for
guitar, published in 1682. Although not as well known as his suite (#9)
in D minor, the pieces are no less delightful. I have made following
arrangement from the Minkoff facsimile edition. Following the arrangement
for a modern 6-string guitar, I have included de Visee's original version
for 5-string Baroque guitar for comparison.
I have also included timing, and here is a guide to the symbols I have used -
w = whole note
h = half note
q = quarter note
e = eighth note
s = sixteenth note
Note - a dot after a time value increases it's duration by 50%, for example
"h." (dotted half note) = three quarter notes length.
a letter in brackets signifies a rest, so (e) = an eighth note rest.
I have only included the note values when they change, so any note has the
value of the preceding one unless a new value is given for it.
De Visee also include partial right-hand fingering in his tablatures, but I
don't have the space or motivation to try and include them, and you shouldn't
have too much trouble anyway. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any queries.

...and here is de Visee's original tablature for baroque guitar. Bear in
mind that he played a 5-string instrument with doubled unison strings,
except for the D string which was paired with another an octave higher.
His A string was also tuned an octave higher than normal, making the D
string the lowest, so keep this in mind when reading the tablature.
I have included ornamentation. Here is a guide to the symbols I have used
(These are slightly different to what de Visee himself used, but no matter) -
X = trill (from upper note)
, = appogiatura (slur from lower note)
# = vibrato
^ or V = downward or upward strum, or rasguedo (strum in direction of
the arrow). It was common practice to not notate open strings
in strummed chords, so feel free to add as many as you like,
unless there is a dot on the open string. A dot on the string
line indicates not to strum that particular string.
De Visee also incorporated slurs but I have left them out here.
